<image:title>Our Team - Dr. Kristin Skow BS, DDS, OMFT</image:title>
<image:caption>After graduating in 1992 from Spring Valley High School in Spring Valley, WI, Dr. Skow attended The University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. She earned a bachelor's degree with high honors in biology and chemistry in only 3 years’ time. She then attended The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in Minneapolis, MN, where she graduated with honors in '99. Dr. Skow is a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). She is a current member of the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Skow also has completed certification as an Oral Facial Myofunctional Therapist, having done so in the summer of 2020. Dr. Skow enjoys practicing dentistry and prides herself in being aware of her patients' whole-body health. Airway care is her passion, and she strives to prevent sleep apnea and other breathing issues. Breathing issues can be diagnosed in the mouth first, and Dr. Skow is astute in such diagnoses and treatment for all ages. Proper breathing is of utmost importance in prevention of dental problems, among a host of other health issues.
Treating infants with issues feeding due to tongue and lip ties is something Dr. Skow feels is the most important thing she can do. Treating tongue ties early establishes proper feeding, swallowing, breathing, and ultimately helps to prevent issues such as sleep apnea. Proper breathing leads to proper sleep, therefore kids treated early can avoid a host of health problems including ADHD, anxiety, and bedwetting.
Practicing in her hometown is something she enjoys, as she often sees 4 generations within a family. Getting to know her patients and catering to their needs as she improves their health is what she enjoys most. She is always learning, but to teach others to learn as she has is where she feels she can make the biggest impact in her area of Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota. Collaboration with other health care professionals is something Dr. Skow works toward, as her patients benefit most by collaboration of all specialties.
In her spare time, she enjoys family time! Her favorite activities are surfing in the summer, and snowmobiling in the winter.</image:caption>

Since graduating in 2002 with presidential honors, I have enjoyed many aspects of my career. My overall mission is to educate patients while offering compassionate care without judgment. I reside in Menomonie with my husband and two daughters. As a family we enjoy being outdoors and active.</image:caption>

<image:title>Infant Laser Frenectomy - How are tongue and lip ties diagnosed?</image:title>
<image:caption>Tongues and lips are only considered to be tied if their movement is restricted, impairing mobility. Correct examination of infants requires the infant be placed on the examiner’s lap with the infant’s head facing the same direction as the person evaluating the infant. It is important to note that not all ties cause problems and require correction. Each case needs to be assessed by an educated and trained practitioner on an individual basis. Tongue tie is a diagnosis based upon function, so what your baby’s tongue looks like can sometimes be less important than how it can move.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sleep Apnea Treatment - Sleep Apnea Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Most people don’t get enough sleep! A lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, judgment, energy levels, ability to retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. In the long term, chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality. Symptoms of sleep apnea include: Headaches Poor Concentration Loss of Libido Tiredness of waking Daytime sleepiness Difficulty waking up in the morning Poor performance in school, on the job, or in sports Increased clumsiness Falling asleep during work or class Untreated sleep apnea affects your well-being. Sleep apnea may contribute to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and erectile dysfunction, as well as to memory and concentration impairment. Since sleep apnea reduces the quality of your sleep and contributes to daytime sleepiness, driving becomes more dangerous. In fact, sleep apnea is a leading cause of car accidents. WHAT DOES APNEA MEAN? Sleep apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep, is a common problem that affects both adults and children. The National Institutes of Health estimate that more than 12 million Americans have sleep apnea, most often undetected or misdiagnosed. In fact, conservative estimates suggest that only 16 percent of sleep apnea sufferers receive treatment. Getting proper treatment for sleep apnea will increase the quality of your life dramatically!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Functional Frenuloplasty - Functional Frenuloplasty</image:title>
<image:caption>Frenectomy or Frenuloplasty, is a relatively minor surgical procedure performed to loosen or remove overly large, tight, or poorly positioned band(s) of tissue that are present inside the mouth, connected to the lip, cheeks or floor of the mouth (frenum) - a condition commonly referred to as being “tongue-tied” or “ankyloglossia” – which can cause speech impediments and difficulties with chewing, swallowing and other aspects of oral function. In infants, this condition can impair feeding, and for some older children, teens and adults, cause daily discomfort/pain and lead to mouth breathing. Once the tissue has been removed, the wound will typically be sutured. Frenuloplasty is a quick procedure, generally taking less than 45 minutes, and is often performed with just local anesthesia in adults.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Myofunctional Therapy - Myofunctional Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>What is Myofunctional Therapy? Highly effective physical therapy exercises to improve breathing, bite, and orofacial posture. A series of simple, quick exercises that strengthen the tongue. Myofunctional Therapy will be required before surgery as well as after, where the focus will be on the tongue’s resting position, chewing and swallowing, and a continued emphasis on strengthening. The older you are, the longer you’ve had to develop compensations so it will require patience to relearn how to do things you have done your whole life without much thought. For a knee surgery, you’d likely see a physical therapist. That same approach is true for the tongue... Myofunctional Therapy is an essential component in the journey to an optimal airway. From the day we are born, we develop habits that continue throughout our lives—some habits are good, others are not. They eventually become engrained in our brains over a period of time, and the not-so-good habits require us to retrain our brains if we want to truly change behavior. For infants, this means behaviors such as proper suction and swallowing, as well as nasal breathing, can have lifelong impacts on growth and development.</image:caption>
